In a campus message, Lee H. Roberts wished a happy New Year to returning Tar Heels and welcomed those coming to campus for the first time.

Dear Carolina Community,

Happy New Year and welcome to a new semester at Carolina! I hope your winter break was filled with rest, connection and inspiration. Whether you are returning to campus or joining us for the first time, we’re excited to have you as part of the Tar Heel family.

This morning, Liza and I joined Alex Brandwein in handing out bagels and coffee as classes got underway. Since then, I’ve watched as students stand in line for their first sip at the Old Well despite the cold. The air may be brisk, but it is full of enthusiasm for a Carolina spring.

As it has for over 70 years, January means ACC basketball. Our women’s team hosts Duke tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in Carmichael Arena, and our men’s team plays NC State on Saturday in Raleigh. As always, I encourage everyone to come out and support the Tar Heels in every sport.

Here’s to a semester of growth and meaningful experiences as we continue serving the people of North Carolina. I hope to see you studying in the library, cheering at a basketball game, working out in the Student Rec Center, watching a live performance or walking through an art gallery, thoroughly enjoying every part of our beautiful and historic campus. Best wishes for a successful start to 2025. Go Heels!
